The phlebotomy training for healthcare professionals course is designed for students, who work for, or plan to work for, a doctor’s office, clinic or other healthcare provider that is a licensed clinical laboratory or public health agency.

Phlebotomy training for healthcare professionals covers all aspects of the blood collection process and how to handle and transport specimens safely. You will become familiar with the various legal and ethical issues that impact a Phlebotomy Technician’s job on a daily basis. Finally, you will be able to practice the various techniques used in a laboratory setting under close supervision.

The phlebotomy training for healthcare professionals includes classroom & lab instruction where the student will get the opportunity to develop critical blood draw skills. Phlebotomy training is applicable to many related medical and technical fields but does not necessarily require licensing or certification in the State of Florida.

To register and enroll for the Phlebotomy Technician Diploma Program, students must meet the following pre-requisites:

  • Possess a high school diploma or GED; and
  • Be at least 18 years old; and
  • Be able to communicate effectively in English; and
  • Provide transcripts from a Post-Secondary school showing satisfactory Health Science (or equivalent) course OR copy of professional license (current) and documentation of 1000 working hours within the medical field.

 

Phlebotomy Training for Healthcare Professionals Course

Phlebotomy is the practice of drawing blood from patients and taking the blood specimens to the laboratory to prepare for testing. The Phlebotomist training course prepares individuals, under the supervision of nurses, phlebotomists and other health care professionals, to draw blood samples from patients using a variety of procedures. During your courses, you will be shown how to draw blood, known as a “stick.” You will practice your sticking skills in the classroom on faculty, staff and fellow students so you are prepared and confident before you begin your externship.

Students are prepared for an extensive clinical externship practicum, meaning STI will arrange for the student to practice phlebotomy procedures under the supervision of Phlebotomists and Clinical Laboratory Scientists in a laboratory setting with in a local healthcare facility. After successful completion of the Phlebotomy Technician class, students are required to spend at least 40 hours practicing phlebotomy and laboratory skills at a local healthcare facility scheduled and arranged by Southern Technical Institute.

The phlebotomist training course at STI provides skilled knowledge for a career as a Phlebotomy Technician. At the completion of the course you will be able to:

  • Demonstrate accepted professional, communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Discuss phlebotomy in relation to the health care setting
  • Identify the anatomic structure and function of body systems in relation to services performed by phlebotomists.
  • Recognize and identify collection reagents supplies, equipment and interfering chemical substances.
  • Demonstrate skills and knowledge necessary to perform phlebotomy.
  • Practice infection control following universal (standard) precautions.
  • Practice accepted procedures of transporting, accessioning and processing specimens.
  • Practice quality assurance and safety.
  • Perform venipuncture procedures to draw blood through a variety of equipment, such as butterfly needles, syringe, and vacutainer, etc.

 

Phlebotomy Technician Clinical Externship

After successful completion of the Phlebotomy Technician course, a clinical externship will be scheduled by Southern Technical Institute at a local healthcare facility.  The clinical externship is curriculum based to ensure that you are well prepared in all aspects of Phlebotomy to include blood draw technique, blood collection lab, and point-of-care with patients. This experience is great for your resume and provides proof of your experience.

Clinical Externship Requirements:

  • Must have a satisfactory criminal background and drug screening.
  • Must provide proof of immunizations history (for clinical externship)

You will perform numerous blood draws within the Outpatient Lab through supervision of Lead Phlebotomists within the hospital. You get “real world” experience working on hard-to-stick cases, such as geriatrics, cancer patients, etc. and exposure to a large diverse patient range. Every stick you perform at the clinical externship is documented and signed. Most students obtain between 75 – 100 documented live sticks within the hospital that increase employment opportunities as a Phlebotomist.

NOTE: All clinical externships are subject to approval by the individual facility based on your completed paperwork, immunizations record, satisfactory criminal background screening and drug screening results.

Certification

After successful completion of Phlebotomy Technician Program, students will receive a Phlebotomy Technician Diploma.

The phlebotomy training for healthcare professionals prepares you to sit for the Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) exam. The CPT is a national credential for the Phlebotomy Technician profession. Certification through the National Healthcareer Association recognizes the competency and proficiency of a clinical individual and is accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA). Your phlebotomy training certification starts at STI.
